4 Ways to Prepare Your Deck for Fall

Discover how to prepare your deck for the changing season.

Discover how to prepare your deck for the changing season.

As summer ends and fall comes knocking quickly, you may start getting your home ready for the colder weather. When doing all your autumn chores, don’t forget about your deck. Here are a few ways to get your deck ready for all of that outdoor autumn fun before the weather gets too cold.

Clean Your Deck

It’s important to clean and dirt or debris off your deck before completing any other maintenance. Stains, mold, mildew, and debris left on your deck will cause problems if it becomes trapped under wet and heavy snow.  Remember, power washing your deck can ruin the color and finish of a wood deck. Clean your deck by hand to keep it in the best possible condition.

Add A Protective Coating

If you have a wooden deck, it is important to apply a water repellent protective finish after cleaning it. This will help to protect it from the snow, sleet, and rain on the horizon. If you do not apply a protective coating in the autumn, your deck is more likely to split, crack, and warp as the temperatures drop.

Get The Surrounding Area Ready

While it is important to look after the surface of your deck, what surrounds it is just as important. In order to ensure your cleaning is effective, look at all of the bushes and trees nearby. It is best to leave a space between and greenery and your deck to avoid moss and mold building up on it. At least a foot of space is best.

Is It Time For A New Deck?

Before you get started on all of the work of cleaning and prepping your deck and the surrounding areas, take a good look at it. Is it time to invest in a wholly new structure? If you have excessive cracking, warping, splitting, and/or structural instability some sweeping just won’t do the trick. It may be time for a new deck this fall!
