Celebrate Earth Day on April 22!

As the temperature continues to rise and the pollen continues to fall, Maryland residents everywhere are preparing their gardens for new spring growth. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or you’ve just purchased your first trowel, explore our helpful tips before you begin planting this season. Happy gardening!

Spring Cleaning Landscape Edition

Once you’ve opened the windows and deep cleaned the carpets, take your spring cleaning chores outdoors. Rid the gardening area of weeds, and make sure that the roots won’t grow back. Take a few minutes to sharpen or clean your gardening tools and purchase any that you might need. If you run to your local hardware store for tools, purchase a soil testing kit as well.

Bring the Soil Back to Life

The winter weather dried out your soil, illuminating vital nutrients that your plants need to grow. Increase the level of moisture in the area you intend to plant by adding an organic material like compost or manure. Use the soil testing kit that you purchased to analyze what it needs. You may need to add more fertilizer to increase the health of the soil and the life of your plants.

Prune the Survivors

If any of your plants survived the winter chill, ensure that you prune them to promote stronger growth. Mid-April and early May are great times to trim existing plants, as unexpected freezes have most likely passed.

Mulch Or Else

After you’ve laid down your fertilizers and other organic materials, consider adding a dense layer of mulch to the flower beds and garden. Mulch holds moisture in the garden, maintaining the temperature and encouraging plant growth. Make sure that your mulch is kept a few inches from the plant stem to avoid rotting.
