Ready Your Landscape For the Changing Season

Fall is right around the corner!

Fall is just around the corner, and before those piles of leaves begin to fall, homeowners should consider the importance of landscape maintenance for the new season. If you focus on these few maintenance tasks before the cold weather blasts through Maryland, your yard will be in good shape come next spring.

No Brown Patches or Bare Spots

One significant benefit of maintaining your landscape through the fall is that you don’t have to worry about the low temperature causing brown patches or bare spots on your lawn. With the use of an aerator tool, you can remove half-inch plugs of turf and soil from your lawn, letting the top few inches of soil to breathe. Water and nutrients will then have more access to the soil, and you’ll be able to keep your grass looking beautiful and green.

Manage Your Landscape’s Water Intake

It is always a good idea to be mindful of the rainfall when maintaining your landscape. Fall is a tricky season, as the days start to get shorter and colder and there is a mix of extreme highs and extreme drops in temperature. At the same time, there is a mix of dry and wet days. An extended period of rain can overwater your lawn, so be mindful of your sprinklers and turn them off for about a week after heavy rainfall. Take note of sunny, dry days as well, and give your landscape an extra drink to stay hydrated.

Your Lawn Will Survive Winter

Winterizing your lawn is very important, and it starts in the fall with raking leaves. To stay ahead of the weather, make sure to start preparing your landscape for the winter before the season even begins. Applying fertilizer in October and November will help to give your grass what it needs to make it through the snow and ice.

Your Flower Beds Will See Spring

Your lawn isn’t the only thing that needs to be taken care of before winter, don’t forget about your annual flower beds and garden! Start preparing to protect them now by planting a cover crop over large beds and applying mulch on smaller beds.

It may be a lot of work, but starting your fall landscape maintenance now will save you time and stress in the coming months. More importantly, the maintenance will protect your landscape that you’ve put time, effort and money into by helping it survive the winter and look amazing in the spring.
